Uber updated its rewards credit card rewards program in October 2019, and this review may not be current. The Uber rewards program has changed from a cash back card to a points card more specific to Uber redemptions. Scroll to the bottom of this article to find alternative cards to the Uber Visa Credit Card.

The Uber Credit Card could be the most valuable card in your wallet if you travel regularly and you spend a lot online. You don’t need to use Uber often to reap the card’s handsome rewards, either. In fact, if you use Uber frequently, you might be disappointed by how little the card earns for Uber rides. But don’t let that hold you back from considering the Uber Credit Card’s unique and lucrative rewards system. It’s one of the best rewards cards on the market—with no annual fee, too.

Why Apply for the Uber Visa Credit Card

Here are a few reasons you may want to consider adding the Uber credit card to your wallet:

Get rewarded for dining, travel and online purchases

The Uber credit card offers 4% back on dining, including UberEATS, plus 3% back on airfare and hotels, 2% back on Uber rides and all online purchases and 1% back on everything else. There are no rotating categories, and no limit to how many rewards you can earn. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a card that consistently earns higher rates in all these categories. If you spend a lot, then this will be a valuable card. Points can be redeemed for Uber Cash, gift cards or cash back.

Earn healthy bonuses for your spending

The card’s sign-up bonus is relatively easy to achieve. If you spend $500 or more within the first 90 days of account opening, you’ll receive $100 in Uber Cash after spending $500 in the first 90 days in cash back. You’ll also earn a $50 credit toward subscription services like Netflix or Spotify if you spend $5,000 or more on your card per year. Unlike the sign-up bonus, this bonus is available every year, and it can help you save on the costs of your favorite online services.

It protects your phone against damage and theft

If you lose or damage your cell phone, the Uber credit will give you up to $600 to replace it with a comparable phone. All you have to do is pay your bill every month with the Uber credit card and then pay a $25 deductible. You’re limited to two claims per year. While you may never need this protection, if you do, it could save you hundreds of dollars.

Uber Visa Credit Card: Drawbacks and Downsides

The Uber credit card has a few drawbacks that potential cardholders should understand before applying:

Rewards for Uber rides are low

Despite being a branded card, the Uber credit card offers just 2% cash back on Uber rides. Many generic travel credit cards match or even exceed this rate. The Uber credit card also doesn’t provide any discounts or bonuses for redeeming rewards for Uber Cash as opposed to a gift card or cash back. This gives cardholders little incentive to use the card on Uber purchases.

It’s expensive to transfer a balance

The Uber credit card isn’t great for balance transfers, as there’s no 0% introductory APR. Any balance you transfer will begin accruing interest right away, making it harder to pay off your debt. The card’s minimum balance transfer fee is $10—twice the minimum many on most rewards cards

Uber Visa Credit Card Alternatives

The Uber credit card has an undeniable appeal for travelers and those who do a lot of online shopping. But if you’re interested in a different kind of cash-back card, try one of these:

American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card

While the Uber credit card prioritizes unique categories, it doesn’t offer special rewards for common expenses like gas or groceries. If you’re interested in this, consider the American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card. It offers 6% back on the first $6,000 in groceries you buy a year. It also offers 3% back at gas stations and certain department stores, and 1% back on everything else.

This card does charge a $95 annual fee, so it’s important to use it enough to offset that charge. For example, if you spend $1,583 on groceries each year, the card pays for itself. The American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card has a 0% introductory APR for 12 months, and its standard APR is slightly lower than the Uber credit card’s APR, too. That makes it a better choice for balance transfers.

Discover it Card

The Discover it Card offers 5% back on rotating categories throughout the year, including restaurants, Amazon.com, gas stations and more. You’ll also earn 1% back on all other purchases. If your spending aligns with the rotating categories, this card could prove even more valuable than the Uber credit card. Perhaps the best thing about it is that Discover matches all of the cash back you earn at the end of your first year—meaning that you’ll effectively earn 10% cash back on those bonus categories.

The Discover it Card has no annual fee, and the standard APR is also lower than the Uber Visa Card’s APR. Its APR is 0% for 14 months, then 13.99% to 24.99%. That makes it a smart option if you want to earn rewards while also paying down credit card debt.
